Focus on bringing in Revenue
Any company on the planet's interest is money. So, ultimately whatever your vision or mission is, whatever your principle may be, ultimately a organisation's success is measured by its revenue. Whether you are an associate or senior manager, if you want to increase your visibility, you need to focus on "What can I do to bring significant money into the company?"
If you are a part of a start-up, even a vital contact is all you need to increase your visibility. If you are in a corporate find key product enhancements that will have a competitive advantage. If you belong to Fortune500 companies, see which space your company can enter into to capture a great market share. Ultimately focus on what you can do to bring cash in-flow.
Solve Key Pain Points
The next most significant thing is solving a pain point. There may be few critical pain points top management would want to focus on when they have the time but are unable to do so because it is not directly relevant to the revenue.
If you can find some time to solve them, of course, apart from your assigned tasks, it will be highly appreciated throughout the organization, and you will soon be given higher responsibilities that will give you chances of speedy growth.
Work on Side Projects
Side Project in relevance to your company. Some proposals get rejected while planning the year's roadmap due to budget or resource constraints. However, you can work on them silently until you actually get it done. What more would delight a company, to get much more work done for the price that they pay?
Did you know? Sony PlayStation itself was a side project. The then Computer Engineer Ken Kutaragi, in the mid-80s was inspired by his daughter to build the next generation video games and worked on it. The then-CEO Sony Norio Ohga allowed him to complete his work, which then took flight and made him the CEO!!
External Influence
Sometimes, it may be hard to reach higher visibility within the company by doing stuff internally. However, sites like LinkedIn can help you get visibility with people inside your organization through external means. You can consistently post on the channel to showcase your knowledge, skills, and interest.
There are many chances of getting team changes and better opportunities even internally. Maybe they only knew you as a coder, and suddenly they might be impressed by your product management skills and can help you prove yourself in the domain.
Participate in organizational building activities
Established companies conduct various activities to get people of the entire organization to collaborate and learn more about each other. Some of the activities can be: training programs, seminars from Industry Experts, hackathons, product stalls, recreational activities such as Zumba, annual tours, etc. These are places where you can showcase your extra-curricular talents to get better visibility.
You can make use of these forums for several things:
a. You can display your unique talents by winning the competitions
b. You can increase hand-shakes, that can turn into opportunities in the long-run
c. Get exposure to many different ideas and perspectives
d. Gain experience by conducting the activities
Lend a Helping Hand
Words spread quicker than fire. Be it a positive act or a negative one. Hence, always put on the best shoes. Help people who really need it. You may not know how it would come back to you!! Whether it be helping a staff who doesn't know how to operate a lift or coaching freshers on getting acquainted with the system or handling a client in the absence of your manager. Keep helping as much as you can, but don't just do it to impress people, but to just be happy for yourself.
Stick to committed deadlines
This could be one of the sexiest things to do in corporates. How often do you come across people who stick to their committed deadlines? But each and every day you easily come across people who give excuses. If you are a man or woman of your words, it will soon reach the top management, and you will become a valuable asset to your organization.
Express interest in the company's growth
This can only happen if your vision and the company's vision blend in a natural way. Imagine you want to lead a very peaceful and undisruptive life, while you work in an organization that aims to build the most disruptive technology on the planet.
First, ensure you are inclined with your company's mission, which will naturally make you be interested in the organization. Then express it and find ways to make your organization better in terms of achieving its mission.
Most of the above-mentioned points may not involve people or direct communication which can be short-lived. But, it is aimed at making you grow fast consistently in a way that can help you find many more opportunities even outside your own company. At the end of the day, focus on your own brand, for it's the difference that boosts your visibility.
